U.S. Junior Women's Doublehanded Championship Sausalito,
Calif. July 8-12, 2008
Thirty-three teams from across the country spent a week at
the Sausalito Yacht Club preparing for and competing in the
U.S. Junior Women's Doublehanded Championship. A 2-day advanced
clinic was followed by 3-days of racing. Relatively light
winds, fog and flat seas for the clinic days were followed
by raging waters conditions with 12-25 knot winds
and chop, putting everyones abilities and endurance
to the test. Ten races were completed over the 3 intense days.
Sydney Bolger (Long Beach, Calif.) and her crew Caitlin Beavers
(Santa Ana, Calif.) dominated US SAILING's 33-boat U.S. Junior
Women's Doublehanded Championship for the Ida Lewis Trophy,
which wrapped up Saturday July 12th at the Sausalito Yacht
Club, Calif. The two 18-year-olds came out of the gates strong
on the first day of racing, winning all three races that day.
They continued their dominance throughout the regatta, finishing
30 points ahead of the second-place team of Eliza Richartz
(Old Lyme, Conn.) and Morgan Russom (Springfield, Penn.).
Two Santa Barbara sailors competed in this national championship
event; Carly Shevitz for her second time, and Hanna Vincent,
her first entry. Shevitz finished a very solid 7th, crewing
for Sally Mace (Newport, CA). Vincent finished 23rd, crewing
for Georgi Ryan (San Diego, CA). Shevitz and Vincent are headed
back to the bay area again this week, sailing together as
a team in the 2008 CLUB 420 ASSOCIATION NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
at the Stanford University Sailing Center, Redwood City, Ca.
