Marina del Rey, July 10-13, 2008
U.S. Sailings Junior Olympics attracted over 100 youth
sailors from Southern California, competing in Lasers, Laser
Radials, 420s and CFJs. The event consisted of a one-day clinic
on Thursday followed by three days of racing on Friday, Saturday
and Sunday in Santa Monica Bay. The winners of the Laser and
420 classes qualified for the US Sailings Single (Symthe)
and Doublehanded (Bemis) National Championships.
Fifteen Santa Barbara youth sailors competed in three different
fleets. In the Club 420 fleet was Paul Heffernan with Willie
McBride, Davey McBride with Tucker Atterbury, Briggs Deardorff
with Kieron Cavanaugh, Travis Benton with Nick Russo-Larson
(Newport, CA). In the CFJ fleet, Emma Deardorff sailed with
Cassidy Shevitz. In the huge Laser Radial fleet (46 boats),

Wind was light for the clinic, moderate for the first day
of racing, full for the second, a white-capping for the 3rd
and final day. The fleet thinned as the wind increased. A
total of ten races were complete over the 3 day event. The
big winner for the event was Oliver Toole from Santa Barbara,
taking first place in the Laser Radial fleet (against 45 competitors)
with six 1st place wins. Second was Ben Spector from Cal Yacht
Club and Sky Adams, also from Santa Barbara, finished 3rd
