SBYF Announces Summer Coaching Staff
Eoin Duggan will coming from Dublin, Ireland to join
our summer staff. Eoin has extensive coaching experience in
Ireland having worked at Lough Derg YC, Royal St. George YC
and Sutton Dinghy Club. Eoin is certified as an advanced sailing
instructor with the Irish Sailing Association. Eoin also counts
a "Child Protection in Sport" certification among
his accreditations. In addition to program administration,
Eoin will be working with the Jr. Racing Team and advanced
sailors in the afternoons.
Craig Schifferns, a Foundation alumnus, will add summer
coaching to his growing SBYF resume. Craig will continue his
responsibilities for overseeing the maintenance and organization
of the Foundation's fleet of Optimists, FJs, 420s, 29ers,
Lasers and powerboats, but will also be coaching intermediate
sailors in the afternoons.
Brian Cottrell, a graduate student in physics at UCSB,
will be working with intermediate and advanced sailors in
the afternoons. Brian comes to SBYF with coaching experience
at both King Harbor and Cabrillo Beach Yacht Clubs. Brian
is a very competitive Laser sailor both locally and regionally
and will be sharing some of his keys to success. Brian is
a US Sailing Level One certified sailing instructor.
Shea Artis has been assisting his older brother Austin
with our Saturday beginning Optimist clinics and will segue
directly into coaching the summer program. In addition to
working with beginners in the mornings, Shea will work with
intermediate sailors in the afternoons. Shea has been around
boats all of his life, but also enjoys water polo and has
a lot of experience working with children. Shea has coached
sailing previously at the Pacific Corinthian Yacht Club in
Channel Island Harbor.
Melissa Callender is a captain of the UCSB Sailing
Team and has been sailing all of her life. Melissa has assisted
with all facets of the Los Angeles Yacht Club summer program
and will be bringing her considerable experience to SBYF this
summer. Melissa will be working with our beginning sailors
in the mornings and intermediate sailors in the afternoons.
Aubrey Toole is also a local product having participated
for many years in both Santa Barbara Seashell Association
and Santa Barbara Youth Foundation programs. Aubrey will be
a freshman at UC Berkeley in the fall after spending the mornings
this summer working with beginning sailors.
Judy Benton will be taking over the reigns from Wendy
Atterbury as Summer Program Administrator. Judy will coordinate
the registration process, serve as liaison with the Police
Activities League Campership Alliance, will oversee weekly
staff meetings and will be there to address parental concerns
as needed.
Dana Jones is the Racing Director of the Santa Barbara
Yacht Club, but is also serving as the interim Program Director/Head
Coach for the Santa Barbara Youth Foundation. Dana will oversee
the entire coaching staff, curriculum development, training
and day-to-day activities of the summer program. Additionally,
Dana will be working with the Jr. Sailing Team to prepare
them for the myriad of regattas this summer.
