Goblin
Opti Regatta
October 24-25, 2009
Santa Barbara Yacht Club
Santa Barbara played host to 45 Optimist sailors and their families
the weekend, October 24 & 25. The Championship Fleet had
26 entrants sailing on the waters in front of the yacht club
and 19 Green Fleet entries sailed inside the harbor, adjacent
to "Seashell Beach".
Conditions were challenging for both competitors and race
administrators as forty-degree oscillations and significant
changes in wind velocity characterized both days' racing.
The top sailors in the championship fleet were able to get
good starts at the favored end, hit the first shift and maintain
their composure during the lulls resulting in consistent finishes
throughout the weekend. Some of the younger or less-experienced
sailors learned about patience, persistence and perseverance.
Six races were completed on the Championship Course, three
each day. With the exception of race 4-Sunday's first race-conditions
rarely exceeded five knots.
On average, there was slightly more breeze on the Green Fleet
course and, under the expert race management skills of Justin
and Madeline McJones of Los Angeles YC, all nine scheduled
races were completed.
Santa Barbara sailors faired particularly well on their home
court with four of the five Championship Fleet participants
finishing in the top ten and SBYSF sailors claiming four of
the top five places in Green Fleet. The future looks very
bright indeed!
After Saturday's racing, SBYC provided a very nice BBQ while
many of the racers enjoyed the warm weather on the beach in
front of the Club.
The next regatta in the SoCal Opti Series is scheduled for
November 14 & 15 at Ventura Yacht Club.
