Opti Midwinters West
Los Angeles Yacht Club, February
14-15, 2009
Santa Barbara was extremely well represented at the inaugural
"Opti Midwinters West" Regatta on the weekend of February
14-15, very graciously hosted by Los Angeles Yacht Club. Four
Santa Barbara sailors were in attendance: one in each of the
championship fleet age-group divisions and one in the "Green
Fleet".
Optimist regattas typically consist of a "Championship
Fleet" and a "Green Fleet". The championship
fleet is divided into three groups: The Red Fleet (ages 13
& 14), the Blue Fleet (ages 11 & 12) and the White
Fleet (ages 10 and under). For scoring purposes, the championship
fleet is scored both overall and by division.
The Green Fleet is for novices and typically sails on a separate
course, isn't scored, and coaching is allowed from the back
of the fleet.
The weekend was a predominantly light-air affair with all
races sailed in conditions ranging from 2-6 knots.
Dane Wilson showed excellent form in the Red Fleet finishing
first in the Red Fleet and tying for first overall with his
brother Quinn, ultimately yielding in the tie-breaker. Quinn
Wilson was solid in all aspects of the game and finished first
in the Blue Fleet and first overall. Lucas Pierce displayed
excellent light-air form upwind finishing second in White
Fleet and sixth overall with four top-five finishes in the
17-boat fleet Championship Fleet.
No scores are kept in the Green Fleet, but unconfirmed sources
report that Matthew Pierce (8) "owned" the Green
Fleet finishing first in seven of the nine races and finishing
second in the other two.
