Skiff Fest
Santa Barbara Yacht Club, Santa Barbara,
California
May 16-17, 2009
by Oliver Toole
This year's skiff featured two fleets, the International 14
and 29er. While the wind remained under 6 knots for the majority
of the event, eight races were completed. The race committee
did an great job keeping up with the frequent wind shifts, as
well as the large amount of harbor activity.
Along with Skiff Fest, Santa Barbara also played host to their
annual harbor swap meet and a rowing event.
Santa Barbara Youth Foundation sailors had a particular good
showing in the 16 boat 29er fleet. Teams included Nick Perez
and Newt Cutcliffe, Hanna Vincent and Garret Tessman, Tucker
Atterbury and Travis Benton, and Oliver Toole sailing with Hans
Henken (from Coronado Yacht Club). Max Fraser with crew David
Leibeberg of Santa Cruz took the 29er fleet. The International
14 fleet was won by Paul Galvez and Guillermo Barra.
If I had three things to take away from this event, they would
be to keep the weight forward, keep the bow down, and double
check the back plug!
