SBYSF 2009 Summer Adventures
The red and white burgee of the Santa Barbara Yacht Club logged
thousands of miles this summer with some of our youth sailors.
Oliver Toole, Sky Adams, Carly Shevitz, Davey McBride and Tucker
Atterbury represented SBYC and the SBYSF at prestigious regattas
on the East Coast as well as in Europe.
Davey McBride and Tucker Atterbury teamed up to compete in the
420 Nationals held in Rhode Island. According to Davey, the
conditions were "radically different from those in Santa
Barbara. Tides and currents played large factors in the races
and took some getting used to." The first two days of racing
were held in moderate breeze, and they went into the last day
holding on to 16th place. However, the wind disappeared on the
final day, and they ended up placing 33rd
out of 152 boats!

Using the Nationals as a "warm-up", they went on to
compete in the Buzzards Bay regatta, also in a 420. They entered
the regatta with tides and currents still fresh on their minds,
but quickly learned that "the biggest factor was the simplest;
sailing in more wind." By the end of the regatta they got
the hang of things, grabbing a 2nd place finish in the last
race. They ended up placing 25th overall out of 126 boats. (Results

Sky Adams sailed in the Laser North American Championship, held
in Ontario, Canada. The wind was light and shifty, with a lot
of chop thrown in to make things even more difficult. Several
large thunderstorms swept through during the regatta, which
was "kind of exciting" according to Sky. She finished
29th out of 121 in a very competitive fleet. (Results)
She also qualified for the Leiter Cup regatta, which is the
U.S. Sailing Jr. Women's Singlehanded Championship. The regatta
was held in Long Island, and while the wind was also light at
this venue, she didn't have to deal with chop. The regatta was
extremely close at the top, with only a few points separating
the top boats all the way until the last day. Sky finished 5th
out of 48. (Results)
Carly Shevitz started the summer in Greenwich, CT at the US
Youth Championships. She sailed in the 420 class, finishing
3rd overall in difficult conditions; light, hot and humid with
lots of thunderstorms. She then traveled to Hampton, VA for
the US Women's Doublehanded Championship, the Ida Lewis trophy.
She skippered the boat, sailing with crew Erica Parker from
San Diego. Carly says they "had a rough regatta because
of a yellow flag and an OCS, and we had never sailed together
before." The conditions were marginal, mostly light breeze,
but they made the best of it to finish 14th overall. (Results

finished up her travels in a big way, heading across the pond
to Lake Garda, Italy, for the International 420 Worlds. One
of only seven girls teams to qualify to represent the United
States, she and skipper Eliza Richartz (Connecticut) sailed
well and qualified for the gold fleet! It was Carly's first
time sailing an I420, but she adapted quickly and ended up placing
42nd in the Gold fleet, out of 122 boats overall.
Oliver sailed in three major regattas this summer, starting
with Kiel Week in Kiel, Germany. Out of 168 International 420's,
he and crew Hans Henken of Coronado Yacht Club placed 28th in
a cold and windy regatta. (Results).
With that under their belts, they made their way to Lake Garda,
Italy for the 29er World Championships. After six days of racing
in consistent breeze, they placed 16th overall in a fleet of
186 boats! (Results

2). Two days later, they jumped back into an International
420 to compete in the I420 Worlds, also held at Lake Garda.
They had previously qualified to represent the United States
there, and were one of only seven boys teams selected to compete
for the U.S. After six days of racing, they placed 20th overall
out of 122 boats representing 30 different countries.
It's been a great summer for our youth sailors-congratulations
to all of you on your accomplishments!
