Fall
Opti Regatta
November 14-15,
2009
Ventura Yacht Club
Last weekend, November 14-15, Ventura Yacht Club played host
to the second of four regattas that will constitute the newly-formed
"SoCal Series": Goblin Opti (SBYC), Fall Regatta (VYC),
Holiday Regatta (CBYC) and Big Rock Regatta (Morro Bay YC).
The hospitality and organization could not have been better.
VYC cleared their boat storage area to provide lots of room
for visiting sailors' boats and their team trailers. Launching
and hauling was well supervised and après sailing activities
were enjoyed by all.
Saturday's conditions were tough for some of the less experienced
sailors as five knots of breeze and twenty degree shifts met
with chop, current and swell. The race committee did a nice
job of keeping things moving and finished six races on Saturday
despite the conditions.
Sunday's conditions were challenging too, but perhaps more
challenging for the race committee than the sailors. The breeze
couldn't decide if it wanted to blow offshore or on and the
result was huge windshifts and very puffy conditions. One
race saw a complete reversal of wind direction during the
race. Eventually the seabreeze prevailed and three races were
complete on Sunday.
SBYSF/SBYC sent eight sailors to the regatta. Miguel Ferreira
finished second overall and first in blue fleet despite winning
five of the nine races sailed. Miguel had great starts, boatspeed
to burn and, by the end of the regatta, showed great improvement
at staying in phase. Lucas Pierce had a great regatta finishing
in fifth place overall and third in blue fleet. While struggling
to get off the line at times, he showed great perseverance
and an uncanny ability to sniff out the shifts to consistently
claw his way back to the front. Lucas' best finish was a second
place in the last race of the regatta. Matthew Pierce, in
only his second championship fleet event, finished eleventh
in the 22-boat fleet and fourth in white fleet. Dustin Oakes,
Shenara Brewer, Kyra Oakes, Paul Harteck and Patch Curtis
all experienced their first championship fleet event and all
earned high marks for their courage battling the unfamiliar
venue, challenging conditions and depth of competitors.
Frankie Dair of CalYC won the event by a slim two points
over Santa Barbara's Miguel Ferreira. Despite winning only
two of the nine races, it was Frankie's consistency that made
it happen.
