High School Program
During the school year, the Foundation sponsors the high
school sailing program for the local high schools. This program
encourages daily practice sessions and interscholastic competition
for both boys and girls at local, regional, and national levels.
This program is coordinated with the Pacific Coast Interscholastic
Sailing Association (PCISA) of which there are over 70 active
high schools on the West Coast.
For doublehanded racing, there are five high school regattas
sailed in the PCISA district throughout the school year. The
top 20 teams then qualify to compete in the Pacific Coast
Championships, where the top 5 teams qualify to compete in
the Mallory Cup (collegiate national championship). All of
the regattas are sailed in CFJs.
For singlehanded racing, there is one qualifying regatta
(Cressy Eliminations) in Laser Radials and Laser full-rigs
to qualify to compete nationally.
In 1995 through 1999, and 2001 through 2007 schools from
Santa Barbara have competed in sailing for the National High
School Championship in the single-handed (Cressy) and double
handed (Mallory) divisions. In 1999 the San Marcos High School
sailing team finished 4th in the US for the Mallory perpetual.
In 2002 the Santa Barbara High School sailing team finished
4th in the US for the Mallory perpetual.
Starting with the 1997-98 school year, most Santa Barbara
High School District students in grades 9-12 enrolled in the
Youth Foundation High School Program have received independent
physical education (IPE) credit for high school sailing. The
Foundation provides the instructors, capital equipment, and
facilities that would otherwise be unavailable through the
school system. Students are included under the Foundation's
general liability and marine policies from the time they leave
the school grounds until the time they leave the sailing area.
