Jr. Sailing Team
PURPOSE
The Santa Barbara Youth Foundation (SBYF) Junior Race Team is
a sailing program intended to promote sailboat racing competition
at local, regional, national, and international levels. The
primary focus will be single and doublehanded racing in Laser,
Laser Radial, and CFJ. Specialized instruction (i.e. for skiffs
and keelboats) will be provided in preparation for other US
Junior events or international events. The program has two levels
of commitment:

Junior Race Team without High School Sailing
ELIGIBILITY
Junior Race Team with High School Sailing
This level is open to full time students attending one of
the following designated Santa Barbara High Schools: Carpinteria,
Santa Barbara, Dos Pueblos, and San Marcos.
A minimum of four sailors are required to field a complete
high school team. Students wishing to participate that do
not have at least three teammates (all from their school)
are still eligible to participate in this sailing program.
High schools must be members of Pacific Coast Inter-Scholastic
Sailing Association (PCISA). Eighth grade students may participate
on the high school team that their school feeds into. (www.pcisa.org).
Junior Race Team without High School Sailing
This level is open to full time students in grades 7 through
12 who have a minimum of one year of sailing experience or
have completed at least one session of the SBYF Learn-to-Sail
Program.
SAILING PROGRAM
The Junior Race Team has two sessions per school year: Fall
session runs from September 15th through January 14th, and
Spring session runs from February 1st through May 28th.
Junior Race Team with High School Sailing
Each session consists of 2 practice days per week (Tuesdays
and Thursdays)
of on the water instruction and short course racing plus various
weekend
regattas. Practice and regatta schedules are attached. Practices
start at
2:15 PM (ready to sail by 2:30 PM) and runs until 5:30 PM
(weather & light
permitting).
Junior Race Team without High School Sailing
Each session consists of 1 practice per week (Fridays) of
on the water instruction and short course racing plus various
weekend regattas. Practice and regatta schedules are attached.
Practices start at 3:15 PM (ready to sail by 3:30 PM) and
runs until 5:30 PM (weather & light permitting).
Practices include: Classroom instruction: racing rules, team
racing rules, tactics, and strategy; and, on the water instruction:
boat handling drills, starts and mark roundings.
Weekend regattas occur approximately one per month (see schedule).
REGATTA SCHEDULE
The most current and complete schedule of regattas open to
junior sailors can be found at the Southern California Youth
Yacht Racing Association (SCYYRA) web site. The URL is: www.scyyra.org.
The SBYF Junior Race Team will focus on a subset of these
regattas. In particular, the Junior Race Team will sail the
Shadden Perpetual Trophy Series (CFJ) and the Ullman-Frost
Perpetual Trophy Series (laser, radial). In addition to these
regattas, High School Sailing will also compete in the PCSIA
High School Regattas (Sea Otter, Anteater, Rose Bowl, Cardinal
and Gaucho).
FACILITIES
Base of operations is the Santa Barbara Youth Foundation Turner
Sailing Dock. Practices will use the SBYF supplied CFJs
and 420s (two sailors per boat) and Lasers and Laser
Radials (one sailor per boat).
TUITION
Junior Race Team with High School Sailing
Fall and spring sessions: $390.00 per session per team member,
plus regatta entry fees and travel expenses. Annual PCISA
dues are $100.00 per school.
Junior Race Team/Middle School Sailing
Fall and spring sessions: $160.00 per session per team member,
plus regatta entry fees and travel expenses. Scholarships

TRANSPORTATION AND TRAVEL
Transportation to and from Santa Barbara harbor and to
and from out of town events is the responsibility of each
parent. Travel expenses (e.g., lodging, meals) are also the
responsibility of each parent.
