Sweeping Changes to Opti & FJ Racing Programs Announced
SBYSF Unveils Plan to Broaden Scope of Programs

Opti Development Team, Opti Racing Team & FJ Racing Team Registration Materials
  Beginning Optimist Registration Materials

On Tuesday evening, September 8th, SBYSF Jr. Program Director Duncan Shea, Foundation President Kent Pierce and Opti Program Chair/Coach/Board Member Craig Wilson announced broad changes to the Opti & FJ Programs for the Fall Semester--some of which supersede information previously released on this website and distributed by the Foundation.

In an effort to meet unprecedented demand, SBYSF will be offering three Optimist classes instead of the originally scheduled two classes.

Beginning Optimist Sailing

Beginning Opti Sailing is for the young sailor who has a recreational interest in sailing but may not have the experience or desire to begin racing. The goal of this program is to provide an ongoing opportunity for sailors who may have participated in the Summer Program to get out on the water and HAVE FUN sailing. Participants will be required to dress appropriately and provide their own life jacket, but all equipment will be provided.

Optimist Development Team:

This program is designed for sailors under 125 lbs and under 15 years of age, who wish to build upon what they learned in the Beginner or Intermediate classes during the summer or who want to improve their racing skills. The class will focus on developing basic skills and preparing sailors to move on to the Opti Race Team. While racing will be a part of the program, especially later in the year, the class will mainly focus on building fundamental skills and getting the kids comfortable on the water in preparation for moving on to the more technical Race Team practices.

We will encourage Development Team sailors to participate in the Opti SoCal Series if they are interested-- those events have "Green Fleet" divisions in which coaching is allowed during races, and those are a great way for sailors to get their feet wet in racing without too much competitive pressure:

Goblin Regatta October 24-25, 2009 Santa Barbara YC
Fall Regatta November 14-15, 2009 Ventura YC
Holiday Regatta December 5-6, 2009 Cabrillo Beach YC
MidWinters West February 13-14, 2010 Los Angeles YC

Each participant will be provided with an Optimist to sail, safe supervision, and coaching. Participants should have completed at least one session of Summer Sailing with the Youth Foundation or demonstrate basic sailing ability. Classes will be coached by Craig Wilson, Duncan Shea and Connor Leech, with assistance from members of the SBYSF Junior Race Team.

Practices will be Friday afternoons from 3:00 p.m. to sunset.

Optimist Racing Team:

This program is for sailors under 125 lbs. and under 15 years old who wish to build upon and improve their racing skills. The program is designed for sailors who already have racing experience, and who want to compete at a high (national/international) level.

Participants will be required to provide their own equipment (i.e. boat, sail, spars, blades, etc.). However, if a sailor demonstrates the ability and interest to participate at this level, but does not have their own equipment, the Foundation will make its best effort to assist in making equipment available.

Craig Wilson--who coached two college national championship dinghy teams, one college team racing national championship team and the current US National Optimist Team Racing team, as well as the top two finishers at the 2008 Sabot Nationals--is the head coach. Additional coaching will be provided by Duncan Shea and Connor Leach.

Practices will be Friday afternoons from 3:00 p.m. to sunset.

FJ Racing Team:

Formerly known as the "Middle School Program," this program is specifically designed for sailors over 125 lbs. OR over 15 who have some sailing experience and are making the transition from US Sabots or Optimists to larger boats. Participants may be introduced to a variety of different boats including Club FJ's, Club 420's, 29ers, Lasers and J/24's. Emphasis is on an introduction to more advanced racing tactics and techniques and having FUN! Practices are on Friday afternoons from 3:00 p.m. to sunset.

Specifically, this program is designed to prepare participants for the Shadden Series; and, to a lesser degree, for the Perry and Ullman/Frost series. See the calendar for specific dates and locations.

Practices are on Friday afternoons from 3:00 to sunset beginning September 4th, 2009 through January 15, 2010. Scholarships are available.

Practices will be Friday afternoons from 3:00 p.m. to sunset.
