Optimist Development Team:

This program is designed for sailors under 125 lbs and under 15 years of age, who wish to build upon what they learned in the Beginner or Intermediate classes during the summer or who want to improve their racing skills. The class will focus on developing basic skills and preparing sailors to move on to the Opti Race Team. While racing will be a part of the program, especially later in the year, the class will mainly focus on building fundamental skills and getting the kids comfortable on the water in preparation for moving on to the more technical Race Team practices.

We will encourage Development Team sailors to participate in the Opti SoCal Series & Harken Series events if they are interested-- those events have "Green Fleet" divisions in which coaching is allowed during races, and those are a great way for sailors to get their feet wet in racing without too much competitive pressure:

MidWinters West February 13-14, 2010 Los Angeles YC
Harken 1 March 6-7, 2010 California YC
Big Rock Regatta March 20-21, 2010 Morro Bay YC
Harken 2 April 17-18, 2010 San Francisco YC
Harken 3 May 29-30. 2010 Cabrillo Beach YC
Harken 4 June 19-20, 2010 St. Francis YC
PCC's August 14-15, 2010 Columbia Gorge, OR
West Coast Champs September 11-12, 2010 Cal YC

Each participant will be provided with an Optimist to sail, safe supervision, and coaching. Participants should have completed at least one session of Summer Sailing with the Youth Foundation or demonstrate basic sailing ability. Classes will be coached by Craig Wilson, Duncan Shea and Connor Leech, with assistance from members of the SBYSF Junior Race Team.

Program Dates:

Fridays, January 15-May 21, 2010
No sailing on April 2nd--Spring Break

3:00 to Sunset

Optimist Racing Team:

This program is for sailors under 125 lbs. and under 15 years old who wish to build upon and improve their racing skills. The program is designed for sailors who already have racing experience, and who want to compete at a high (national/international) level.

Participants will be required to provide their own equipment (i.e. boat, sail, spars, blades, etc.). However, if a sailor demonstrates the ability and interest to participate at this level, but does not have their own equipment, the Foundation will make its best effort to assist in making equipment available.

Craig Wilson--who coached two college national championship dinghy teams, one college team racing national championship team and the current US National Optimist Team Racing team, as well as the top two finishers at the 2008 Sabot Nationals--is the head coach. Additional coaching will be provided by Duncan Shea and Connor Leach.

Program Dates:

Fridays, January 15-May 21, 2010
No sailing on April 2nd--Spring Break

3:00 to Sunset
