BEGINNING SAILING (MORNINGS)

The Beginning Sailing Program is geared towards beginning sailors between 8 and 13 years of age. The goal for students in this class is to have FUN while learning the basics of sailing and water safety. Students will gain confidence and independence in one-person Optimists. This emphasizes fun sailing, beach games and on the water drills. The curriculum will cover rigging, basic boat handling, points of sail, and basic ocean & beach safety. Boats will be provided and space is limited. Sessions are held in the mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. COST: $320 per session. Scholarships are available.

TEEN BEGINNING SAILING (MORNINGS)

Teen Beginning Sailing (mornings) is open to children between 12 and 17 years of age. The goal for students in this class is to have FUN while developing confidence sailing primarily in two-person Club FJ's. The beginning sailing curriculum will address rigging, basic boat handling, wind direction, water safety, and developing confidence in handling a dinghy on all points of sail. Boats are provided but space is limited. Sessions are held in the mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. COST: $320 per session. Scholarships are available.

SABOT RACING (AFTERNOONS)

This class will be taught by SBYF head coach and is the only class that meets at the Santa Barbara Launch Ramp next to the Sea Shell Condos. This two-week session will be held only once, July 28 - August 8 (Session #4). This is a "bring your own boat" session designed for sailors who wish to participate in Sabot Nationals hosted this year by Santa Barbara Yacht Club and the Santa Barbara Seashell Association on August 9-10. Parents are encouraged to help their young sailors rig and de-rig their boats daily for the class. The goals of the class are to have FUN sailing, improve Sabot handling skills, practice good sportsmanship, learn basic racing rules of sailing, and develop confidence on the racecourse. The skills taught are basic right of way rules, boat tuning, sail trim, and race tactics. Class assignments may be adjusted according to the sailor's ability level. Space is limited. One session is available Monday through Friday from 1:00 pm (boats rigged) to 4:30 pm (parent pickup time). A coach will be on site at 12:30 pm daily. Cost: $320 per session.

INTERMEDIATE OPTIMIST SAILING (AFTERNOONS)

This class is for Sabot, Sea Shell, and other small dinghy sailors who would like to improve their boat handling and knowledge of sailing through competition and to introduce concepts that progress from independent boating skills and basic right of way rules to boat tuning, sail trim, race strategy, tactics, and team racing. Goals for this class include having FUN sailing, while improving the sailor's basic boat handling skills, developing an understanding of good sportsmanship, learning the basic racing rules of sailing, and developing confidence on the race course. Boats are provided from the SBYF fleet of Optimists, but space is limited. Sessions are available Monday through Friday from 1:00pm to 4:30pm. Cost: $320.00. Scholarships are available.

INTERMEDIATE SAILING (AFTERNOONS)
LEARN TO RACE

This course is designed for sailors who have had previous Youth Foundation sailing experience, have at least a sixth grade diploma, enjoy year round sailing, wish to sail in junior or senior high school, or just want to broaden their sailing horizons. Curriculum will include sailing predominantly in CFJ's but also in Lasers, C420's, and other performance dinghies. The goal of this class is to have FUN sailing, while improving the student's boat handling skills, becoming familiar with the techniques of sailing high performance dinghies, learning the basic racing rules of sailing, and developing self confidence on the water. This class is a pre-requisite for the Middle/High School Fall Sailing Programs. Boats are provided but space is limited. Students will be assigned to a type of boat based on their size, weight and boat availability. Sessions are available in two week lengths, Monday through Friday 1:00pm to 4:30pm. Cost: $320 per session.

JR. RACING TEAM

This eight-week course is designed specifically for advanced sailors who wish to develop their skills in preparation for this summer's major events. Sessions 1 & 2 (June 16 - July 11) will be spent preparing for the Jr. Olympics. Session 3 (July 14 - July 25) will be spent preparing for FJ Nationals and Session 4 will focus on preparation for a variety of class and/or US Sailing Championships. The cost for any two-week session is $320.00. The cost for the entire eight weeks in $800.00. Scholarships are available.
