Summer Sailing Program
Beginner/Novice Sailors
(Ages 8-17, 9am-12pm M-F)
The SBYSF offers two sailing classes for beginners.
These classes cover the same material, but instruction is
done in two different kinds of boats based on the childs
age and size. Beginner Sailing Optimist is for the
smaller kids, ages 8-13 who weigh up to 115lbs. Instruction
will take place in the SBYSFs fleet of Optimist dinghies,
which are 8 feet long and designed to be sailed by one child.
Beginner Sailing CFJ is for kids ages 12+ or over 115lbs,
and instruction will take place in our fleet of CFJs (14 foot,
two-person boats).
Beginner Sailing Optimist
The Beginning Sailing Program is geared towards beginning
sailors between 8 and 13 years of age. The goal for students
in this class is to have FUN while learning the basics of
sailing and water safety. Students will gain confidence and
independence in one-person Optimist sailboats. This program
emphasizes fun sailing, beach games and on the water drills.
The curriculum will cover rigging, basic boat handling, points
of sail, and basic ocean safety. Boats are provided and space
is limited. Sessions are available in the morning from 9:00
a.m. to 12:00 p.m. COST: $325.00 per session.
Beginner Sailing CFJ
Club Flying Juniors (CFJ) Beginning Sailing (mornings) is
open to children between 12 and 17 years of age. The goal
for students in this class is to have FUN plus develop confidence
and independence sailing primarily in two-person CFJs. The
beginning sailing curriculum will address rigging, basic boat
handling, wind direction, water safety, and developing confidence
in handling a dinghy on all points of sail. Boats are provided
but space is limited. Sessions are available in the morning
from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Cost: $325 per session.

Intermediate/Advanced
Sailors
Optimist Racing
This class is for Optimist sailors who would
like to improve their boathandling and knowledge of sailing
through competition and to introduce concepts that progress
from independent boating skills and basic right of way rules
to boat tuning, sail trim, race strategy, tactics, and team
racing. Goals for this class include having FUN sailing, while
improving the sailor's boat handling skills, developing an
understanding of good sportsmanship, learning the basic racing
rules of sailing, and developing confidence on the race course.
Boats are provided but space is limited. Sessions are available
Monday through Friday from 1:00pm to 4:30pm. Cost: $325.00.
Teen Racing
This course is designed for sailors who have
had previous Youth Foundation sailing experience, have at
least a sixth grade diploma, enjoy year-round sailing, wish
to sail in junior or senior high school, or just want to broaden
their sailing horizons. Curriculum will include sailing predominantly
in CFJs but also in Lasers and other performance dinghies.
The goal of this class is to have FUN sailing, while improving
the student's boat handling skills, becoming familiar with
the techniques of sailing high performance dinghies, learning
the basic racing rules of sailing, and developing self confidence
on the water. This class is a pre-requisite for the Middle/High
School Fall Sailing Programs. Boats are provided but space
is limited. Students will be assigned to a type of boat based
on their size, weight and boat availability. Sessions are
available in two week lengths, Monday through Friday 1:00pm
to 4:30pm. Cost: $325.00 per session.

JR. RACING TEAM
This eight-week course is designed specifically
for advanced sailors who wish to develop their skills in preparation
for this summer's major events such as the Jr. Olympics to
be held July 17-19 in Newport Beach, the C420 Nationals to
be held July 18-20 in Palo Alto, FJ Nationals to be held July
31 - August 2 in San Diego, and/or 29er PCCs to be held July
24-26 at the Gorge. The cost for any two-week session is $325.00.
The cost for the entire eight weeks in $825.00. Requires approval
of Jr. Sailing Team head coach.
